In 2006, Vietnam's oil production ranked 3rd in Southeast Asia (SEA), lagging behind Indonesia and Malaysia. On the other hand, Vietnam is the fifth largest producer of natural gas in SEA, with a production of 7 billion cubic metres of gas in 2006. Vietnam's natural gas industry is still in early stages of development. At present, the production of natural gas is meant for domestic consumption, primarily for the power generation industry.
