Games published for the major games consoles are still the biggest source of revenue in the Computer Game Publishing industry, but social games played online and on mobile phones are playing an increasingly large part. Video games have now become a common form of entertainment for a large proportion of the population, although many of these are casual rather than regular gamers. Games are now played by many people that do necessarily not fit into any obvious market for games. Women and girls are now playing games more than ever, and mobile phone gaming has opened the door to a large, previously untapped market.
Companies in this industry publish video games for all platforms, including PC, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, Microsoft Xbox One, Sony PlayStation 4, Sony PlayStation Vita, mobile devices and online platforms. The industry does not include publishing of non-gaming computer software such as operating systems (see IBISWorld report J58.290) or computer game development.
The report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecast, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
