The Book Publishing industry includes firms that publish books, leaflets and maps in print, digital or audio form. The United Kingdom is home to some of the oldest and most respected book publishers in the world. Cambridge University Press, the world's oldest publishing house, has been operating continuously since 1584. The United Kingdom is the largest exporter of books in the world, thanks to the ubiquity of English as a first or second language, the reputation of the UK industry and the strength of local copyright law. However, declining sales of printed books and the rise of e-books have completely changed the environment books publishers operate in.
Businesses in this industry publish books, leaflets, atlases and maps in print, electronic or audio form. However, the industry excludes the activities of freelance journalists, the publication of advertising material and the publication of sheet music (see IBISWorld report J59.200).
The report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecast, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
