Australia is a substantial producer of alumina, accounting for about one-quarter of the world total. Its alumina production is expected to be about 20.4 million tonnes in 2011-12, compared with 18.5 million tonnes in 2006-07, and the bulk of output is exported. These exports, amounting to an expected 17.1 million tonnes in 2011-12, are estimated to generate revenue of $6.03 billion for the year. Imports of alumina are negligible by comparison. The size of the local market for alumina, estimated at $1.11 billion in 2011-12, is dwarfed by exports.
