Abstract:

In ----, Lloyds TSB confirmed its leadership in debit cards, with a share of -- in terms of both cards in circulation and value of transactions. The bank benefits from being the leading provider of current accounts in the UK. ...In terms of operators, Visa Europe dominates debit cards, holding around -- of cards in circulation and number of transactions. The company reported a strong performance in ----, with its transaction value rising by -- on the previous year, supported by the switch of Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC, as well as by a strong increase in online shopping. MasterCard also reported increased value of transactions, supported by rising use of debit cards by consumers, although its increase was lower than that of Visa, thus MasterCard saw its share eroded slightly in ----. ...The unpopularity of the scheme was suggested to be related to the limited number of stores which allowed customers to gain and spend points. In addition, reward programmes on debit cards are difficult to run for operators, due to the low interchange revenue.

...Debit cards are expected to continue to expand faster than credit cards over the forecast period, as customers continue to reduce the use of cheques and minimise credit card risk. Debit card volume transactions and cards in circulation are expected to register - CAGRs over the forecast period, while transaction value will see a - annual average increase in constant value terms. ...In addition, competition is likely to come from electronic direct/ACH, where the value of transaction rose by - in ----, and where a constant -- value CAGR is expected over the forecast period. Longer term, beyond the forecast period, all the debit cards in circulation are likely to become contactless, driving further use of the cards, as the maximum value of contactless transactions has already increased from -- to --. This maximum value is expected to increase further, and is likely to receive a strong boost from Transport for London, which is due to start accepting contactless debit cards across the London transport system by the end of ----. ...
