The rise of contactless payments in the UK in recent years has contributed to the increased use of debit cards, with -- of all UK cards (many of which have a debit function) now featuring a contactless payment facility. The ease and convenience of paying via a contactless card is accelerating the decline of cash as a payment method in the UK as the number of merchants accepting contactless payments continues to increase. ...UK consumers continue to spend more frequently online, with mobile internet retailing increasing in current value terms by -- in ----. Internet retailing concepts such as click and collect , which enables consumers to purchase items online and then collect them from a store-based retailing outlet at a time which is convenient, fuelled growth in retailing towards the end of the review period, with debit cards the most popular payment method for online retailing. Although credit cards are often used for large payments, some websites continue to charge consumers for paying via credit cards, while debit cards are often cheap or free to use, most commonly when booking flights. ...The frequency of debit card transactions has increased in recent years, with national supermarket chains even accepting debit cards for micropayments. Consumer behaviour in the UK is changing as a result of this, with debit card payments for amounts of less than �-- now being commonplace.
