Abstract:

The Zimbabwean life insurance segment has been one of the fastest growing not only in the region, but globally over the past five years. With roughly -- of total written premiums, life insurance comprises the larger segment of the overall insurance sector. ...With roughly -- of total written premiums, life insurance comprises the larger segment of the overall insurance sector. Also in terms of growth prospects, life is expected to outpace non-life insurance from ---- through to ----, as the market will expand by --.- annually - allowing life insurance to become even larger, with a market share of --.- in ---- - a trend we expect to continue beyond the current forecast period. This is partly due to the fact that life insurance (as is the case in the non- life segment) is growing from a low base. ...In the coming years we expect the life market to persist with growth at high double-digit rates. ...We expect life insurance premiums to grow at a more sustainable level in both local currency and US dollar terms in ---- as base effects from exceptional growth in the past few years begin to level off. Indeed, recent growth, in part boosted by regulatory changes, has been exceptional, with over -- growth in ---- and --.- over ----. We believe that the sector will see ongoing performance improvements through ----, with growth of -.- . In addition to base effects, a conservative consumer environment on the back of ongoing economic malaise and rising unemployment will be a weight on the purchase of compulsory life policies. We expect very little wage inflation as public sector employees are subject to tight spending restrictions, with the government keen to balance the budget deficit. ...
