Slowly emerging from decade-long economic depression that lasted until around ----. Zimbabwe s decision to ditch its currency in favour of the US dollar in ---- has allowed it to overcome the debilitating hyper-inflation era. ...Zimbabwe s decision to ditch its currency in favour of the US dollar in ---- has allowed it to overcome the debilitating hyper-inflation era. The country s climate and topography lends itself well to agricultural production, illustrated by its relative self-sufficiency in past years; with the exception of the recent drought, it is political problems rather than irredeemable climatic problems that remain a barrier. Notwithstanding the decade-long slump, Zimbabwe has a well-established alcoholic drinks culture. ...With the economy picking up, foreign retailers (mostly from South Africa) are increasingly interested in investing in Zimbabwe. Retail shelves are now fuller, leading retailers are reporting firmer sales, and outside investment is increasingly forthcoming.

...Food consumption is expected to strengthen considerably over the medium-to-long term as headline economic growth and under-control inflation boosts consumption across all segments. The food industry will benefit from an influx of high-income Zimbabweans from the diaspora who fled over the past decade. Despite the decade-long depression, the tastes and preferences of consumers remain more developed than in most regional markets. Soft drinks are expected to benefit from strengthening consumer confidence and spending power fuelled by the end of hyperinflation. Low per capita beer consumption allows room for growth. Zimbabwe s mass grocery retail industry remains an investment target for leading South African retailers in particular. Once political and economic recovery begins, with store infrastructure already in place, foreign investors could purchase stores at bargain prices.
