Abstract:

The extensive drought affecting southern Africa since ---- will threaten food security in an already vulnerable region. Local grains prices will increase once harvests are complete on the back of reduced output and more expensive imports, which will have consequences on regional monetary policy. ...South Africa will turn into a net corn importer in ----, which will have important regional consequences as the country is southern Africa s main supplier of corn, particularly white corn. The ----/-- corn crop in southern Africa will recover significantly from the reduced harvests of the last two years, as El Nino will gradually wane over H--- and elevated local prices will induce higher plantings. Consumers will face higher prices for white corn, as well as dairy and livestock products, over the coming months. ...Consumers will face higher prices for white corn, as well as dairy and livestock products, over the coming months. This will induce substitution away from white corn and towards other grains such as wheat and rice, while substitution towards yellow corn will only be secondary as most consumers view it as livestock feed.

...BMI View: We expect Zimbabwe to remain a net corn importer over the longer term. Over the next five years, we expect production of the grain to demonstrate moderate growth, although production will remain well below the totals seen in the early ----s and much of the growth will be in the form of a recovery. ...BMI View: We expect Zimbabwe to remain a net corn importer over the longer term. We are more optimistic regarding the sugar sector, where access to key markets and potential for productivity improvements will drive production over the long term. ...We are more optimistic regarding the sugar sector, where access to key markets and potential for productivity improvements will drive production over the long term. Although we forecast a domestic sugar market surplus, the sector remains below potential and our forecasts are relatively subdued despite our expectations for higher average prices than current levels in the coming years.

...We have revised down our ----/-- Zimbabwean corn production estimate from ---,--- to ---,--- due to dry weather associated with El Nino. ...We include the completed harvest in ----/-- for methodological consistency. We have revised down our ---- corn consumption forecasts due to relatively limited availability on the back of the drought. We are forecasting a significant rebound in Zimbabwean corn production in ----/-- largely due to improved weather. ...
