About This Report

Abstract:

BMI View: Despite a relatively favourable economic outlook, we expect mixed fortunes for US metals producers with steel makers in particular, likely to find themselves challenges by falling prices, rising import volumes and currency movements. Elsewhere, steady if modest growth in construction and autos manufacturing should sustain demand for aluminium, copper and other metals over our forecast period through the ----. ...However, recent indictors coming out of the US metals sector has been mixed. Data from the World Steel Association (WSA) shows US crude steel production to have contracted by more than - during the first seven months of ----, while capacity utilization across US mills was reported to have fallen below -- in the early September. Recent news reports also paint a concerning picture, with one of the country s leading steelmakers, US Steel announcing it was sidelining the majority of its production capacity at its Fairfield. ...Recent news reports also paint a concerning picture, with one of the country s leading steelmakers, US Steel announcing it was sidelining the majority of its production capacity at its Fairfield. August ---- saw the announcement by leading domestic mill US Steel in August ---- that the company is permanently closing the blast furnace and several associated steel production facilities at its steel plant in

...Other areas of the US metals sector are traditionally import-focused and should hence be less sensitive to changes in global prices or international exchange rates. We expect the US to continue importing significant quantities of refined metals, such as aluminium, copper, and zinc, as well as bauxite ore. While the US exports some metal, we expect that the bulk of metals sector production will be used for domestic consumption rather than for export abroad. Domestic US companies will dominate production of their respective metals, although laws on foreign ownership of US based companies enables some foreign companies to operate as well, with various foreign steel firms maintaining US operations. Other positives for the US metals sector include steady expansion in key metals-intensive industries which are likely to underpin sustained growth in demand. ...We also forecast the construction industry will grow -.- on average per annum in ---------, while non-residential construction will increase demand for heavy machinery, as well as refined metal inputs. Moreover, we expect the multi-year housing recovery to continue, keeping demand for metal-intensive durable goods

...Taking these indicators into account, we note that the steel industry in particular faces growing challenges. One the one hand, steady economic growth should provide a steady platform for steel demand and usage over the coming quarters. ...
