About This Report

Abstract:

BMI View: A growing economy, high water demand and decreasing water supply is putting the UAE s water infrastructure under some pressure, increasing the need to invest and maintain current infrastructure to avoid a shortfall in the future. However, improved and more rigorously enforced water management plans, as well as the reduction of leakage and wastage, will help the UAE to overcome its water shortages. ...They are also more environmentally friendly, as less water needs to be extracted from the surrounding environs. These views are reflected in our good growth projections desalination production, and for treated wastewater, which will in turn augment the water resources available for consumption, as we anticipate treated wastewater catering to much of the industrial and agricultural requirements, freeing up freshwater and desalinated water supplies for domestic consumers. The country is also a leader in the field when it comes to water system development, and the activity levels of projects and investment are likely to remain high. ...Key projects continue to progress, and the announcement of a unified water strategy and system among the Gulf nations will support growth in the sector. These developments are vital to bolster the country s struggling water systems, particularly as the UAE Federal Electricity and Water Authority expects overall water consumption to grow by nearly -- by ----.

...The emirates are focusing on increasing desalination capacity, improving technology and modernisation, as well as making a strong push to reduce waste water. The development of solar-powered desalination solutions for water scarcity is likely to be a key development area for the UAE over the longer term. ...The development of solar-powered desalination solutions for water scarcity is likely to be a key development area for the UAE over the longer term. Solar powered desalination is, in our view, going be an extremely attractive means of generating desalinated water in countries with suitable climates. It will not only help to defray the substantial electricity needs involved in setting up and maintaining desalination facilities, but will also enable the UAE to reduce its thermal energy generation requirements somewhat, and thereby enlarge the available hydrocarbon exports. ...Solar powered desalination is, in our view, going be an extremely attractive means of generating desalinated water in countries with suitable climates.
