Abstract:

BMI View: We forecast rapid growth in aluminium consumption and production over the coming years as the UAE embarks upon diversification and a construction boom. We forecast a slight increase in aluminium imports over the coming years; however, bauxite imports will see rapid growth given the country s lack of commercial deposits. We forecast production to increase from -.--mnt (million tonnes) in ---- to -.--mnt in ----, as Emirates Global Aluminium increases output by ---kt by ----. While this marks a significant turnaround from much of the last decade where the UAE s aluminium output expanded rapidly, we still expect the UAE to be one of the main contributors to global aluminium supply over the coming years. We forecast only a moderate uptick in aluminium prices over the next five years, however, the UAE s generous energy subsidies will insulate the company s expansion plans from volatility in prices. ...Dubai Aluminium (Dubal), owned by Emirates Global Aluminium, intends to invest USD---mn over the coming three years to upgrade its smelter. After completion, the planned upgrade will boost annual output at the facility by ---,--- tonnes, from the current -.-mn tonnes.

...BMI View: We expect the UAE to become an increasingly large importer of steel as domestic production struggles to keep pace with a slew of construction projects. Emirates Steel will remain dominant and we see little room for new entrants in the coming years. ...The company accounts for almost all of the UAE s production and we see no new entrants driving growth in the coming years. We expect Emirates Steel to become increasingly affected by the country s workforce nationalisation policies as the government aims to reduce dependence on expatriate labour and reduce unemployment.
