Abstract:

Exports Under Pressure: Based on the latest customs data, exports fell by -.- y-o-y in August ----, marking a y-o-y contraction in every month since the beginning of the year. Our outlook for exports remains bearish over the medium term, informing our forecast for Thailand s real GDP growth to come at -.- in ----. ...Breach Of Contract Leads To Ship Discount: PSL has secured a discount of around USD-.--mn on each of two vessels it has taken from the shipbuilder Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering. The two bulk carriers, each with a deadweight tonnage of --,---, had been promised with fuel efficiencies and savings that they ultimately did not have, leading PSL to claim for breach of contract. BMI notes that even with global oil - and bunker - prices having collapsed in ----, the cost of fuelling vessels is a major outlay for shipping companies, and so they are keen to purchase the most fuel-efficient ships possible. ...The two bulk carriers, each with a deadweight tonnage of --,---, had been promised with fuel efficiencies and savings that they ultimately did not have, leading PSL to claim for breach of contract. ...Gross tonnage at Laem Chabang, Thailand s largest port, is set to rise by -.- to --.--mn tonnes in ----, and will average growth of -.- a year over our medium-term forecast period to ----. ...Box handling at the same port will rise -.- to -.--mn twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in ----, and will grow by an average of -.- annually over the medium term. ...At the port of Bangkok, BMI projects that tonnage will grow by -.- in ----, to --.--mn tonnes, with container handling set to grow by -.- , to -.--mn TEUs. We expect total foreign trade to see real growth of -.- in ---- and -.- in ----.

...BMI View: We expect continued robust growth at Thai ports in ----, but this is down as much to the base effects of a developing economy and investment in the countries ports rather than a strong outlook for the country on an economic and political basis. The military junta will now be in power until ----, and, as a result, political tensions will continue to weigh on the investment climate, and consumer and capital spending on containerised imports will be hit. ...BMI View: We expect continued robust growth at Thai ports in ----, but this is down as much to the base effects of a developing economy and investment in the countries ports rather than a strong outlook for the country on an economic and political basis. On the exports front, these have been falling thanks to low commodity prices globally. ...
