About This Report

Abstract:

NJJ Capital took over Orange in ----, rebranding it to Salt Mobile in April ---- and it becomes the latest player to attempt to compete with Swisscom. The incumbent retains a -- market share, and has seen off competition from Orange and TDC in the past. ...We do not expect Salt to focus on prices, which would lead to volatility in the market and higher than expected growth. Its initial strategy of segmentation - between younger and older users - and adding accessories to its plans - such as headphones - means that Salt will not be looking to undercut its rivals on price, and this drives our current forecast for mobile subscriptions in Switzerland. We believe that migration to -G/-G will be the bigger trend, expecting it to reach -- of all mobile subscriptions in ----. ...Sunrise and UPC will look to compete with more customers on convergent offers, as a way to drive loyalty and lower churn. In terms of subscription growth, we believe that the market will end ---- with a total of --.---mn mobile subscribers, a number we forecast jumping modestly to --.---mn by end of our forecast period in ----.

...BMI View: The Swiss telecoms market takes advantage of high-income households and a willingness to pay for top services which drive ARPU, but the dominance of incumbent Swisscom remains a concern. Price cutting has failed, with operators, including new entrant Salt Mobile, competing on services, but Swisscom continues to call the shots, as highlighted by its move for convergence to consolidate its leadership in a saturated market. ...BMI View: The Swiss telecoms market takes advantage of high-income households and a willingness to pay for top services which drive ARPU, but the dominance of incumbent Swisscom remains a concern. Price cutting has failed, with operators, including new entrant Salt Mobile, competing on services, but Swisscom continues to call the shots, as highlighted by its move for convergence to consolidate its leadership in a saturated market. We believe that the market will be driven by a growth in premium services in ---- and beyond as new subscriber organic growth prospects are diminished due to a high degree of penetration and market saturation. ...Swisscom is testing LTE-Advanced Pro services, scheduled to launch in ----. Initial tests have demonstrated a -Gbps download speed.

...The trend of declining fixed voice subscriptions is also present in Switzerland, but at a lower level than in other European markets. This is because the move to convergence has slowed some of the decline, as well as the strength of Swisscom. ...
