Abstract:

Switzerland s life market is saturated, with large indigenous providers and well established multinationals competing with (and often collaborating with) private banks, universal banks and wealth managers to develop innovative product offerings in order to gain market share in a highly competitive sector. The main area of concern in the short- to medium-term will be the Swiss National Bank s policy of deeply negative interest rates, which can erode life insurance company balance sheets. ...Business models that seek to grow money on interest rates are unworkable in the Swiss market and will require adjustment. We also note that an ageing demographic will have a corrosive effect on the profitability and solvency of life insurance portfolios, potentially leading to market consolidation by the larger players and less attractive offerings for consumers as insurers guard themselves against long-term downside risk. However, these issues are unlikely to impact trends in the near term. ...We also note that an ageing demographic will have a corrosive effect on the profitability and solvency of life insurance portfolios, potentially leading to market consolidation by the larger players and less attractive offerings for consumers as insurers guard themselves against long-term downside risk.
