About This Report

Abstract:

We have made substantial downward revisions to our growth estimates and forecasts for the Angolan mobile market, following the publication of new data to December ---- by the country s telecoms regulator, INACOM. According to INACOM, there were just over --mn mobile subscriptions in the country at the end of ----, for a penetration rate of -- . ...We expect the limited competition between the country s two mobile operators to continue weighing on growth in the mobile sector, as the lack of price competition results in generally high mobile tariffs and limited service innovation. The main upside risk to this view would be the entry of Angola Telecom as the third mobile operator, which would likely drive much more vibrant price competition as the new entrant aims to capture enough market share to compete with the more established players. Angola s mobile operators are keen to take advantage of the demand for high-value services by rolling out premium, data-centric services. ...We upgraded our -G/-G subscriptions growth outlook to account for stronger take- up owing to availability of low-cost devices and declining tariffs. Moreover, our view of strong adoption of mobile data services, by regional standards, is also due to usage of mobile services being concentrated among Angola s wealthier consumers in urban areas, with many rural communities remaining outside of network coverage, or unable to afford the high cost of even traditional voice and SMS services.
