Abstract:

----, with --.-mn arrivals in ---- and reaching --.-mn by ----. The second and third biggest source markets, although at a distance, remain North America and Europe, with respectively ---,--- and ---,--- arrivals forecasted for ----. The number of airline connections make it relatively easy to reach, and South Korea is attempting to develop its attraction amongst North American countries, especially the US, which is already a key trading partner in a wide variety of sectors. By ----, these two regional source markets will maintain their position (respectively ---,--- and ---,--- arrivals in ----), although we expect the number of arrivals from the US to decrease slightly (--.--- ) between ---- and ----, potentially as a result of currency fluctuations. Accordingly, aside from the US, the other top nine source markets are regional. ...Despite rocky relationships between the two countries regarding comfort women during World War II, Japanese tourists continue to increasingly enjoy the cultural tourism South Korea has to offer. This will continue through to ----, reaching -.-mn arrivals.

...South Korea has a very well-developed tourism market, which has been constantly increasing in the past few years and will continue to do so over the next five years as investment and promotion increase. Indeed, despite worries in ---- that MERS was going to seriously affect tourist arrivals in the country, figures for year-end and for the beginning of ---- show that the impact of MERS on South Korean tourism was less than anticipated and arrival numbers are bouncing back. ...South Korea has a very well-developed tourism market, which has been constantly increasing in the past few years and will continue to do so over the next five years as investment and promotion increase. Indeed, despite worries in ---- that MERS was going to seriously affect tourist arrivals in the country, figures for year-end and for the beginning of ---- show that the impact of MERS on South Korean tourism was less than anticipated and arrival numbers are bouncing back. As such, in ----, we expect that the number of tourist arrivals to South Korea will continue to increase, reaching --.-mn (a --.-- increase from ----). We expect this trend to continue over the rest of the forecast period as South Korea continues to develop effective and targeted tourism promotion campaigns. Firstly, it will continue to develop strategies aimed at attracting an increasing number of tourists from the Southeast Asia region, in particular China (who are known to spend significant amounts of money when they travel) and Taiwan (the quota of working holiday programmes between the two countries was just recently increased).

...< ALACRA META ABSTRACT>BMI View: Tourism in South Korea will grow over the forecast period. Inbound tourism, driven by increasing numbers of Chinese visitors, will see particularly strong growth. ...
