Abstract:

BMI View: Our forecasts for South Korea s two main ports anticipate positive growth in ----, although these figures will post a slight drop on our estimated figures for ----. With the Chinese economic slowdown mostly abating, and growing real GDP and GDP per capita growth, we see a good macroeconomic foundation on which the shipping industry can reap dividends over the next couple of years. Growth at South Korea s two major ports, the Port of Busan and the Port of Incheon, will post slightly lower figures in ---- than those we estimate for the country in ----. ...Meanwhile, real GDP growth for the Chinese economy will continue to slow over the coming years following a forecasted decline to -.- in ---- (down from -.- in ----). The South Korean government later issued a press release through the country s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries downplaying its alleged role in the merger claims, saying it recognises a need to maintain the existence of the two companies when considering the impact a merger could have on South Korea s import and export-oriented economy and global shipping alliances, as well as Busan port s transhipment competitiveness . Hanjin Divestment Strategy Continues With Sale Of Terminal: Continuing its plan to focus on the container shipping industry and to improve its liquidity, Hanjin Shipping will divest from its terminal in Gimpo, South Korea. After the divestment, Hanjin will be left with just one terminal in the port of Incheon, although the company will operate -- terminals in total at multiple facilities by end-----. The company is also looking to sell off its remaining -- stake in Hanjin Shipping Newport, which has one terminal in

...In addition, the Bank of Japan s (BoJ) Asset Purchase Programme has led to the steady weakening of the yen relative to the won, increasing the price of Korean products relative to Japanese ones, which will have a knock-on effect for demand for Korean goods from Japan. ...In addition, the Bank of Japan s (BoJ) Asset Purchase Programme has led to the steady weakening of the yen relative to the won, increasing the price of Korean products relative to Japanese ones, which will have a knock-on effect for demand for Korean goods from Japan. This has undermined the competitiveness of Korean exports in markets where Korean products compete directly with Japanese ones. ...
