Abstract:

BMI View: Slovakia s water sector is extremely underdeveloped and the country s water supply is massively polluted. There are a number of causes for this, including poor infrastructure, high water losses, and extremely high pollution levels due to a lack of sewerage connections and an underdeveloped wastewater treatment sector (WWTS). ...However, we believe Slovakia still has a long way to go due to a lack of recent investment, a shrinking project pipeline and poor economic performance. Although we expect significant investments in water infrastructure to resume, which will lead to lower water demand, lower water losses, and lower water extraction requirements, the recent decrease in water tariffs will counteract this slightly, as cheap water undermines water conservation habits in domestic and industrial consumers alike. However, it is not only pollution and poor infrastructure which inhibits the Slovakian water sector - the country also faces extreme droughts, particularly in the east of the country. In ----, the droughts became so severe that the government was forced to offer subsidies to farmers who were unable to water their fields and livestock. At the opposite end of the spectrum, in ----, Slovakia and the wider region faced some of the worst flooding in recent history, which has created a number of other issues that must be considered when mapping effective and efficient water management for the country.

...Slovakia s water sector is extremely underdeveloped. ...Lower tariffs now mean water companies have limited funds to make new infrastructure investments. Severe flooding in ---- and ---- has meant investment has been focused on repairing damage rather than new developments. Slovakia s poor economic performance acts as a hindrance to growth in the country s water sector. ...Severe flooding in ---- and ---- has meant investment has been focused on repairing damage rather than new developments. Slovakia s poor economic performance acts as a hindrance to growth in the country s water sector.

...Slovakia s entry into the eurozone on January - ---- underlines the country s strong reform efforts. Adoption of the euro will continue to enhance economic integration with the eurozone. ...Adoption of the euro will continue to enhance economic integration with the eurozone. Thanks largely to the economic and business-friendly reforms pursued since ----, macroeconomic performance before the financial crisis was impressive, characterised by high levels of foreign direct investment, rapid GDP growth and falling external vulnerability. A healthy banking sector and stable public debt dynamics have mitigated Slovakia s exposure to the eurozone sovereign debt crisis. ...
