Slovakia is a full member of the euro area: its banks have automatic access - if needed - to assistance from the European Central Bank. As a result of the crises of the early-to-mid-----s, Slovakia s banking sector is dominated by local subsidiaries of major Western European institutions. It therefore has the benefits of world-class systems and practices. The sector enjoys one of the lower rates of non-performing loans among both emerging and developed peers, while capital adequacy ratios also compare favourably.
