Abstract:

BMI downgraded the outlook for device spending in Singapore in the Q--- update following weak import data for several important device categories in early ----, such as tablets, smartphones and TV sets. We now forecast consumer electronics device spending will decline by -.- in ---- to USD-.-bn. In addition to the fact that Singapore is a mature market where several device trends have passed their peak, mild local currency depreciation against the US dollar is another negative factor impacting our forecast. The computer hardware segment forecast was downgraded in Q- as tablet demand is cannibalised by phablets and the maturity of the desktop, notebook and peripherals markets means there is little compensation for the tablet contraction. Hardware segment performance is however expected to be slightly stronger than in ---- - when the tablet market contracted even faster due to the combination of a drop off in first-time buyers and form factor competition - while the PC market also declined due to a concentration in desktop and notebook replacement spending in ---- due to Microsoft s withdrawal of support for XP. ...The computer hardware segment forecast was downgraded in Q- as tablet demand is cannibalised by phablets and the maturity of the desktop, notebook and peripherals markets means there is little compensation for the tablet contraction. ...BMI View: We downgraded our forecast for consumer electronics device sales growth in Singapore in the Q--- update. We believe the rate of device ownership proliferation is one factor for the decline in recent years as first time buyer numbers dropped sharply, but form factor competition is also a negative, for instance in the cannibalisation of tablet sales as phablets have become more common. This means growth potential in Singapore is very limited, but it is still a very attractive market for vendors because of the premium focus that affords them wider margins than in intensely competitive emerging markets. ...We believe the rate of device ownership proliferation is one factor for the decline in recent years as first time buyer numbers dropped sharply, but form factor competition is also a negative, for instance in the cannibalisation of tablet sales as phablets have become more common. ...BMI View: Singapore was one of the first markets globally to pass through the smartphone and tablet booms, and after several years of spending declines as the market adjusted to replacement sales volumes we envisage relatively stability over the medium term. Growth potential is severely diminished in volume terms, and spending will also be flat, but there are still pockets of the market where trends are much more distinct. ...
