Abstract:

We have slightly modified our forecasts for the Russian mobile market in light of ongoing subscription growth volatility. The market is periodically impacted by high disconnections as operators have cleaned up their subscriber records: almost -.-mn subscriptions were lost in Q--- alone. ...The market is periodically impacted by high disconnections as operators have cleaned up their subscriber records: almost -.-mn subscriptions were lost in Q--- alone. This trend will continue for the foreseeable future, particularly while the market depends on price competition to retain customers and justify further network investments. The licensing of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) will merely exacerbate this issue. ...All operators are pushing -G services, with VimpelCom switching its investment from -G to -G, and Tele- launching the service in more regions, including Moscow.

...Mobile subscription growth was muted in the first half of ----, weighed down by a sharp reduction in registered SIMs in the first quarter and further declines in dedicated mobile broadband connections. We have scaled down growth forecasts for the short to medium term and expect ---.-mn subscriptions by ----. We have raised our baseline historical data for -G/-G adoption over the ------- period in light of new top-line market data estimates provided by MTS and VimpelCom. We now expect -G/-G subscriptions to represent --.- of all mobile subscriptions in ----, as a result of new shared network build-out agreements announced in H---, new spectrum allocations and capex-optimising strategies such as tower spin-offs. The fixed-line market will continue to decline because of mobile competition, but the broadband market will grow, helped by uptake in both fibre and -G networks. ...We now expect -G/-G subscriptions to represent --.- of all mobile subscriptions in ----, as a result of new shared network build-out agreements announced in H---, new spectrum allocations and capex-optimising strategies such as tower spin-offs. ...BMI View: Growth in the Russian telecoms market has been relatively flat of late, owing to market saturation and a lack of new competitive dynamics. Operators efforts to bolster their value proposition through the development of converged service packages are only slowly yielding positive results, but such services are not yet completely offsetting declining contributions from basic voice and data services. ...
