Abstract:

BMI View: Russian defence spending will increase by - in ---- amid declining international oil prices. New procurement will be driven by the need to control the country s borders, the fight against internal terrorism, the ongoing involvement in Ukraine and the Syrian civil war, and the need to modernise the armed forces. ...Having said that, local companies hold a strong international presence and are working to increase cooperation with foreign companies. In addition, the country s defence manufacturers are enjoying increased demand for their products as a result of increases in defence spending in the Asia-Pacific and Latin American regions, plus a resurgence in arms purchases from Russia s traditional markets in the developing world, notably Africa. As the likelihood of these risks sparking armed conflict has increased, as Russia is actively playing a more prominent role in international politics, the defence budget has started to rise accordingly. ...As the likelihood of these risks sparking armed conflict has increased, as Russia is actively playing a more prominent role in international politics, the defence budget has started to rise accordingly. The fact that the defence ministry has dedicated such a high level of funding to maintaining the current size and increasing the strength of its armed forces indicates the importance that Moscow gives to the country s military power, even under difficult economic conditions.

...BMI View: Russian military expenditure will increase - in US dollar terms in ---- following an abrupt decrease in ---- amid the government s ongoing fiscal consolidation measures. Expenditure is projected to reach USD--.-bn in ----, representing -.- of GDP. ...
