Abstract:

BMI View: In light of an improving economy in Romania and the eurozone recovery, trade activity will grow and private consumer demand will increase, providing opportunities for the freight sector in general. As exports increase in agricultural and heavy machinery, rail freight will see moderate growth in ----, while road freight will have the strongest growth due to improved domestic conditions and investment in infrastructure. ...The growth in exports will benefit rail specifically, while a growing ICT and electronics sector will also increase tonnage for road and air. While air freight will still be negligible compared to other freight modes over our forecast period, rail will have steady growth also due to higher demand for exports of agricultural goods and heavy machinery by Romania s main trade partners Germany, Italy, France and Hungary. Road freight will continue to dominate the freight mix over ----, with a share of over --.- of the total market share. ...While road freight currently dominates the transport mix in Romania, its freight transport sector is more diversified than most, with inland waterways also having great potential. Thanks to the Danube and the Port of Constanza, inland waterways will continue to play a vital role in the freight mix and is forecast to account for about -- over the next few years.

...Romania is running late with the planned privatisation and restructuring of several state-owned companies, mainly in the energy and rail transport sectors. Out of the -- companies selected for minority or majority privatisation or liquidation, -- procedures are still pending. ...The government has admitted seeing state-owned companies as a lever to intervene to adjust the market and achieve social objectives.
