About This Report

Abstract:

The collapse in global oil prices and regional food oversupply is likely to continue applying supply-side disinflationary pressures, boosting consumer purchasing power as well. Romania s value-added tax (VAT) on food products was slashed from -- to - in June ----, which is likely to pull the country back into deflation. ...Over the longer term, we forecast private consumption to comprise --.- of GDP by ----, up from --.- in ----. While Romanian households are on average significantly less wealthy than regional peers (such as Poland and Hungary), this low base level implies to us that significant wealth convergence gains can be realised in the years ahead. A stable currency will also support consumption, as the European Central Bank s monetary expansion prevents euro strength and keeps imports relatively cheap for Romanian households. ...With GDP per capita estimated at USD-,--- for ----, Romania remains one of the poorest countries in Europe. Therefore, we expect improvements in purchasing power to have a strong impact on food sales, especially among the lowest-income segments of the population.

...BMI View: An improving consumer outlook on the back of rising disposable incomes will drive growth in Romania s food and drink industry throughout our forecast period. A positive outlook for food and drink spending will bode well for the mass grocery retail sector which we forecast to experience strong growth over the short term. Throughout the medium-to-long term, we expect consumers to trade up price points and increasingly embrace premiumisation. ...The main risk to Romania s improving growth story is posed by the trajectory of monetary policy in the country. We believe the NBR may have cut the policy rate too far and too fast. ...
