Healthy real GDP growth, a strong Qatari consumer and Qatar s relative protection from fluctuating oil prices compared to other Gulf states, all provide upside risk for the country s shipping sector. ...Headwinds in the global economy contribute to the ---- lag, but we also foresee a drop in real export growth from -.-- in ---- to -.-- by ----. Qatar will need to work hard to maintain exports over this time, but should have a boost beyond our medium-term forecast when the ---- FIFA

...A major downside risk scenario in ---- is that the Port of Hamad is not ready to launch into full operations in ---- as planned. The port was previously supposed to open in ----, although this was subject to delays. However, the confirmation that Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup in ---- continues to remove downside risks to multiple economic, construction and port throughput growth forecasts. In terms of wider regional stability, if Iran were to follow through on its threats to close or attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz, the resulting instability and disruption to trade would directly impact Qatar s shipping sector. This would filter through quickly into impacting Qatar s economy too. However, with Western relations increasingly thawing, a competition risk that Iranian gas could come onto the market is a more palpable threat. This could have serious ramifications for Qatar s economy, which is heavily reliant on gas receipts, so our forecasts are subject to risk should there be any large, unforeseen hike or drop in gas prices.
