Abstract:

Qatar is rich in natural resources, with oil and natural gas providing the bulk of government resources and underpinning the economy. Despite the fall in global oil prices, government revenues remain high and Qatar s enormous sovereign wealth fund continues to invest in infrastructure projects on a massive scale. ...While Qatari consumers appear to have a modest appetite for credit and credit facilities remain under-used, appeal and demand is likely to continue to expand. As Qatar develops its retail infrastructure, with the opening of several new high-end malls, and improves its position as a regional travel hub (boosted by the ---- opening of Hamad International Airport and various other projects in the run up to hosting the ---- World Cup), we expect to see more international retailers setting up in the country. Qatar does face intense competition from regional tourism and shopping hub Dubai, which attracts significantly higher visitor numbers. There is, therefore, concern that developers will be unable to fill all of the new retail space coming to the market. Overall, however, high rates of household spending and world-leading disposable income levels mean demand for high-end luxury retail is set to continue growing, and the country offers enormous long-term potential.
