BMI View: The performance of Qatar s petrochemicals industry picked up in Q--- on the back of rising polyethylene export volumes, improved prices and a rise in the ethane-naphtha spread. However, this should not be seen as indicative of a trend as risks are posed by the expected slump in Chinese and European imports. ...However, there was some upside in Q--- with an -- quarter-on-quarter improvement in net profit due to improved sales volumes, better polyethylene prices and reduced operating costs. Qatar maintains fifth place in our Petrochemicals Risk/Reward Index for the Middle East and North Africa region this quarter, although its score has seen a modest recovery from last quarter s -.- points fall with a rise of -.- points to --.- points. ...Increased competition from Iran as the sanctions regime is reduced and the rival petrochemicals producer ramps up exports. Securing guaranteed feedstock for all planned projects may become more difficult, as petrochemicals capacity rises. Growth has been underpinned by surging Asian markets, but this dependence could backfire as the economic slowdown begins to take hold. Iran has started to produce large amounts of gas for petrochemicals production and could compete with Qatar for investment in downstream sectors in the future, although the political setting for investment in Iran remains shaky. Qatar s oil reserves are likely to run out by ----. If momentum in the GTL sector is lost - with new and more competitive entrants to the market - petrochemicals sector development is likely to slow. Rising gas prices will push up the cost of ethane feedstock at a time when naphtha prices have fallen to lows.
