However, it should also be noted that the Port of Muhammad Bin Qasim is almost half the size of the Port of Karachi, its neighbour, so although growth will be moderately more subdued at -.- for total tonnage and -.- in TEUs handled, the port will still be handling far more overall. Into the medium term, growth will remain positive and above readily vulnerable numbers, averaging -.- y-o-y growth in tonnage throughput at the Port of Karachi, compared to -.- at the Port of Qasim, whereas container throughput will average -.- at Karachi and -.- at Qasim. ...These figures suggest the country is steadily recovering, with a solid consumer base and a foundation on which sectors such as shipping could build sustainable growth on, as there is room in the economy to absorb trade expansion. In addition, a sustained lowering in oil prices and the removal of sanctions on Iran could provide opportunities such as the troubled Iran-Pakistan pipeline project will be other notable external events that should help shape the country s economy and trade for the better. On the other hand, high political risk remains an endogenous, downside threat to our forecasts. The Pakistani government will need to maintain a high level of military spending, to the detriment of other investment and development spending, in the wake of three militant groups announcing that they have joined forces in their campaign against the government. A strong intensification of the security threat could lead to lower-than-expected GDP growth (at a positive but potentially vulnerable -.- in ----), which could amount to lower trade and ultimately have an effect on port activities and shipping levels.

...In June ---- Pakistan s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif weighed in on the dispute by barring the PNSC from carrying petrol or diesel. Government Seeks Ties With Diverse Trade Partners: In August ---- Pakistani and Thai officials announced they were looking to finalise a bilateral free trade agreement by mid----- in order to decrease both countries over-dependence on traditional export markets. ...
