Abstract:

BMI View: Pakistan s local defence industry remains underdeveloped due to a lack of investment into R&D, and as such, domestic companies rely heavily on assistance from foreign firms to manufacture sophisticated military equipment. The majority of the armed forces more high-tech requirements are therefore predominantly met through imports. ...This will also create significant opportunities for imports, as the local sector will lack capacity to meet demand for high-tech products over the medium term. While we do expect the country s traditional defence trade partners - the US and China - to continue to account for a large share of Pakistan s defence imports over the next few years, we see growing opportunities for foreign players, such as Turkey or South Korea, to enter the market. Additionally, any significant reduction in defence spend by Islamabad would likely provoke a reaction from the country s powerful army chiefs - raising the threat of a military coup. ...While we do expect the country s traditional defence trade partners - the US and China - to continue to account for a large share of Pakistan s defence imports over the next few years, we see growing opportunities for foreign players, such as Turkey or South Korea, to enter the market.

...Nurol Technologies and Belgian Duma Engineering in December ---- for the joint production of armoured vehicles. HIT is also engaged in the production of the Al-Khalid II main battle tanks (MBT), along with China s North Industries Corporation (Norinco). Trials will take place in Q---, with production to be rolled out later in the year. In March ---- Pakistan tested the locally produced Shaheen-III ballistic missile, which appears capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to every part of India with its range of up to -,--- miles. Additionally, in the same month, a top adviser to the Pakistani government was quoted by the media as saying that the country needs short-range tactical nuclear weapons to deter India. NASCOM and the Pakistani army are working on developing a UCAV, comprising a Burraq UAV armed with the locally produced Barq laser-guided missile. Initial tests took place in March ---- and were reportedly successful.
