Abstract:

From ---- onwards, we expect to see a substantial decrease in construction industry growth as economic headwinds and poor investor sentiment pull the headline figure down to normalised levels. Also, due to the small size of the industry - only USD---mn in ---- and USD---mn in ---- - there will inevitably be high- levels of volatility in the industry, but we expect the growth level to trend way below the level posted for ----. ...This will negatively impact private consumption, although we do expect to see some growth in the residential sector, supported by a continued strong flow of remittances from the emigrants in the United States. Residential construction will also be supported by a government commitment to social housing projects, with the Chamber of Builders reportedly planning to build a minimum of -,--- houses in ----, on top of the planned --,--- government homes. While we do not expect to see a repeat of ---- growth rates, therefore, we do continue to expect to see some overall growth in the construction sector which is forecast to reach over USD-.-bn in ----. ...Residential construction will also be supported by a government commitment to social housing projects, with the Chamber of Builders reportedly planning to build a minimum of -,--- houses in ----, on top of the planned --,--- government homes. ...The construction sector will continue to be a bright spot for the Nicaraguan economy in ----; however, growth will continue at a considerably slower pace than in ----: the construction industry consistently outperformed the IMAE (a monthly economic activity index used by the Central Bank of Nicaragua, with a construction metric based on cement consumption) over ----, registering an average y-o-y increase of --.- compared to -.- for the economy as a whole. However, we have seen a drop in business confidence, which we expect, along with a poorer performing economy in general, to weigh heavily on the construction industry from ----. ...The construction sector will continue to be a bright spot for the Nicaraguan economy in ----; however, growth will continue at a considerably slower pace than in ----: the construction industry consistently outperformed the IMAE (a monthly economic activity index used by the Central Bank of Nicaragua, with a construction metric based on cement consumption) over ----, registering an average y-o-y increase of --.- compared to -.- for the economy as a whole. ...In June ---- the Federal Court of Accounts of Brazil announced it was suspending new funding to Eletrobras in relation to the construction of the much-delayed Tumarin hydropower plant in Nicaragua following accounting irregularities and concerns relating to risk. Nicaragua remains heavily reliant on regional funding to drive forward infrastructure projects. ...
