However, although recent rate cuts are welcome in terms of their immediate beneficial impact on new car sales, the fact that rates have had to be cut four times by the RBNZ points to some underlying weaknesses in the New Zealand economy. This partly informs our more cautious auto sales view over ----/--. ...Over our forecast period to ----, we are expecting new vehicle sales to show growth of -- , to take total new vehicle sales to over the ---,--- unit mark. We expect stronger growth in passenger car sales than in commercial vehicles over the --------- period.

Over the medium term, the government s programme of significant investment in road and social infrastructure programmes should lend some support to commercial vehicle sales.
