Abstract:

Despite a volatile economic climate, Dutch life insurance claims have remained relatively constant in both USD and local currency terms over the past few years. This reflects the sophistication of the country s life insurance market, with the leading providers tending to be experienced and disciplined underwriters, though the gross loss ratio has deteriorated as premiums have fallen in recent years. ...At about -.- deaths per -,--- citizens, the mortality rate in the Netherlands is currently lower than in many Western European nations, including Belgium (--.-) and the UK (-.-). The extent to which the government s proposed cutbacks in state healthcare spending will have an effect on dynamics remains to be seen, yet it s highly possible that life insurance claims will begin creeping up slowly over the next few years. A relatively low level of morbidity has also contributed to a lack of claims activity, which is testament to the high standards of state healthcare provision in the Netherlands. ...The extent to which the government s proposed cutbacks in state healthcare spending will have an effect on dynamics remains to be seen, yet it s highly possible that life insurance claims will begin creeping up slowly over the next few years.

...Gross life premiums in ---- were slightly higher than we had anticipated; gross non-life premiums slightly lower. In general, our forecasts for both segments are broadly similar to those of Q- ----. ...This, in turn, will be driven by inflation in health costs and the Netherlands ageing demographics. The latest reports from the leading insurers confirm that they are finding the current environment of zero interest rates and flat yield curves a challenging one in which to invest. Many are optimising their capital structures - with some buying back stock and others issuing securities. Some companies are expanding their offerings in the General Pensions market. The initial public offering by state-owned holding company NLFI of its stake in insurer a.s.r. is a recent highlight.

...Previous expectations of marginal growth in Dutch life insurance premiums over our forecast period have been replaced by a more bearish outlook over the coming quarters, as we note that the impact of various demographic and economic factors, including stagnant population growth and limited expansion in GDP and household spending.
