Abstract:

Business Monitor International Ltd Page - plan is likely to be implemented in early ----, in line with our view that new elections by end----- are in the offing. Following the vote, the ruling VVD party will have a stronger mandate to implement its much touted plan to overhaul the tax system. ...Imports will continue to lead the way in relation to y-o-y real growth, but both imports and exports are poised to improve in this respect by ----. Germany will remain the key trade partner over the medium term, with the most volatile market being Russia, whose position as number five in terms of the Netherlands top import partners could be under threat over our forecast period if relations remained strained with its European neighbours or, indeed, worsen. Manufactured goods will remain a key export and import out of and into the Netherlands over the medium-term period. Meanwhile, over the medium term, fuels will remain a key export and, particularly, import market, with only manufactured goods being worth more in US dollar terms by the end of ----. A strengthening domestic economy supports rising consumer demand for imported goods, which, in turn, supports road freight tonnage, and continued high production levels for key export items, particularly manufactured goods, is set to boost rail freight volumes over the medium-term period.

...Highlighting the strides that the Netherlands has made in the logistics sector over recent years, as well as underlining how well-placed the country is to compete with its peers over the medium and long term, the Netherlands ranked in second to Germany in the ---- World Bank Logistics Performance Index. In the aggregated ------- LPI, Germany ranked highest at -.--, followed by Singapore (-.--) and the Netherlands (-.--). Seamless and sustainable logistics are consistently viewed by the Netherlands government as an engine of growth. It would be highly unlikely that Germany is surpassed as the Netherlands key trade partner in the immediate aftermath of our medium-term forecast, although we do see long-term opportunities in North America (predicated on growing air freight links due to Amsterdam benefiting from the prestige of Schiphol airport and the links to Europe that it offers). Past ----, fuel imports and exports are poised to keep enjoying high levels of y-o-y growth, boosting the overall trade picture, while imports are set to remain ahead of exports in the trade mix after our forecast period. ...Past ----, fuel imports and exports are poised to keep enjoying high levels of y-o-y growth, boosting the overall trade picture, while imports are set to remain ahead of exports in the trade mix after our forecast period. Domestically, real GDP is penciled in to rise by approximately -.- y-o-y between ---- and ----, supporting steady growth in the road freight sphere as consumer demand matches this growth.

...Stagnating demand from the eurozone - the Netherlands biggest trading partner - and reduced production at the Groningen gas field in ---- will cap export growth, as reflected in our forecast for real exports to expand by -.-- in ----. Gas exports comprise the bulk of total Dutch exports, at nearly -- as of ---- before reduced production was mandated by the government due to the side effects of minor earthquakes caused during the production process. ...
