Abstract:

Mozambique presents a mixed picture in terms of economic development. More than half of the population lives at or below the poverty line (according to World Bank data), and this is a significant barrier to the development of the formal retail market. ...Spending on alcoholic drinks and tobacco is minimal by comparison - at USD--mn in ----, this subsector accounts for just -.- of total household retail spending. There is significant growth potential in this sector due to the rising young adult population, as this age bracket tends to consume the most alcohol, and there has been substantial investment in the domestic production of alcoholic beverages. As such we are seeing consumers slowly able to shift from home-brewed alcohols to cheap commercial beer, driving spending growth in this category. ...There is significant growth potential in this sector due to the rising young adult population, as this age bracket tends to consume the most alcohol, and there has been substantial investment in the domestic production of alcoholic beverages. ...It is hoped the new industrial free zone will increase and diversify the country s exports, promote technological development and create jobs. ...Consumer price inflation of --.- in ---- is also a challenge for consumers and retailers. At present, while total household spending will increase in local currency terms in ---- (to MZN---bn from MZN---bn in ----), the impact of currency movements mean spending will contract in US dollar terms, falling by almost -- to reach USD-bn. Although a relatively populated country, total household spending levels of around USD-bn make this is one of the smallest retail markets in the region, reflecting very low per capita income rates and limited urbanisation. Opportunities remain largely confined to the budget sector, with the vast majority of spending taken up by essentials, including basic food and drink products and housing and utilities costs. ...
