Abstract:

We hold a positive outlook for Mozambique s food industry, as household purchasing power increases at a rapid pace over the next five years. As highlighted in our consumer outlook, Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world. ...As highlighted in our consumer outlook, Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world. Therefore, most of the population spends the lion s share of their incomes on food and drink staples, such as cereals and vegetables, as we estimate that food and non-alcoholic drinks account for more than half of total household spending. Any increase in household income will automatically translate into higher food consumption. ...Similarly, confectionery products - and most packaged foodstuff - will remain a luxury for the great majority of households, even by the end of our forecast period. It will take significantly more than five years for these categories to take off.

...Although Mozambican consumers are facing mounting headwinds over the coming quarters, we continue to hold a long-term positive outlook for household spending. Household spending is still among the lowest in the world, but we forecast the country to experience positive, yet moderate long-term economic growth following our downward forecast revision. ...Although Mozambican consumers are facing mounting headwinds over the coming quarters, we continue to hold a long-term positive outlook for household spending. Household spending is still among the lowest in the world, but we forecast the country to experience positive, yet moderate long-term economic growth following our downward forecast revision. Meanwhile, many consumer-oriented multinational companies, such as drinks manufacturers Diageo and SABMiller, have invested in the country in recent years. ...With gas projects intended to be a major source of investment in the country, this will continue to weigh on consumer confidence over the coming quarters. Limited employment opportunities, combined with currency weakness and high interest rates, will cap household spending growth.

...Lastly, we caution that the bulk of private consumption growth is likely to come from the growing expatriate population and national elite, rather than ordinary Mozambicans. The dramatic increase in rent prices in affluent areas of Maputo, driven by a thriving expat community working for natural resources companies, illustrates the emergence of a high-end consumer class. ...
