Abstract:

Morocco s worst drought in three decades is having a stark impact on the agribusiness sector in the short term. Production of grains will plummet by more than two-thirds for wheat and barley and by more than a quarter for sugar. ...Morocco raised the custom duty on soft wheat imports to -- from -- from June -- to August --, ----. According to the USDA, the intention behind the move is to stabilize prices at USD----USD--- and protect the value of the local harvest while ensuring adequate supplies to the domestic market. Dairy and beef output will also be affected due to the impact of the dry weather on availability of pasture. ...According to the USDA, the intention behind the move is to stabilize prices at USD----USD--- and protect the value of the local harvest while ensuring adequate supplies to the domestic market.

...BMI View: In the short term, we expect the severe drought afflicting the country in ---- to reduce output dramatically for the grains and sugar sub-sectors. Meanwhile, dairy and beef production growth will also slow down. However, we expect this to be a temporary setback and all areas of Morocco s agriculture sector are set to enjoy moderate to strong growth from ---- to the end of our forecast period. Our optimism is bolstered by the government-initiated Green Morocco Plan, which is likely to see increased investment in an effort to reduce the industry s weather-related production risks out to ----. We believe that the twin strategies of producing high-yield and market-related agriculture, as well as improving the existing water conservation programme, will yield good results in the medium-to-long term. ...Our optimism is bolstered by the government-initiated Green Morocco Plan, which is likely to see increased investment in an effort to reduce the industry s weather-related production risks out to ----.
