Abstract:

Lower oil prices will have a differing impact on the countries in the MENA region as net importers and net exporters of oil adjust to the new price environment. For the large oil exporting economies, this will entail rationalised infrastructure spending plans. ...The GCC markets maintain their outperformance in our MENA RRI, owing to continued significant government investment - despite ongoing fiscal consolidation in the face of low oil prices - and their more stable investment environments. Our newly expanded regional coverage has resulted in Iraq and Lebanon entering the bottom of the ranking tables, a position we expect them to maintain over coming quarters, due to the sizeable risks facing prospective investors Momentum behind gas projects in the Middle East has accelerated under low oil prices as countries eye gas to boost domestic power generation and as a means of diversifying exports. Renewables capacity will account for only a small fraction of electricity generation in the MENA region over our ---year forecast period due to heavy reliance on accessible and relatively economic gas- and oil- fired generation in major markets. ...Our forecasts for strong growth in electricity generation and capacity in Egypt are underpinned by the delivery of fast-track gas power projects, which we expect to be commissioned as large offshore gas discoveries are brought online through to ----. There is a growing risk that the government s focus on gas will undermine renewables investment - leading to delays and cancellations to wind and solar projects.

...Coal is the dominant source of power generation in the SSA - largely due to South Africa s well established coal mining and power generation sector (see chart below). Cross-regional power sector expansion efforts tend to be centred on boosting hydropower, which represents a relatively cheap and available - albeit volatile - source of power. ...Cross-regional power sector expansion efforts tend to be centred on boosting hydropower, which represents a relatively cheap and available - albeit volatile - source of power. For example, we note that about --,---MW of capacity is under construction in the SSA according to our key projects database - compared to --,---MW of capacity being installed in the region as of end ---- (BMI estimate). Angola and Ethiopia will drive this growth, as the two countries are currently constructing -,---MW and -,---MW of hydropower capacity respectively. ...Angola and Ethiopia will drive this growth, as the two countries are currently constructing -,---MW and -,---MW of hydropower capacity respectively. This dynamic will mean coal s share in the power mix will decline from --.- in ---- to --.- in ----, while hydropower will grow its share from --.- to --.- over the same timeframe.
