Abstract:

BMI View: A rise in cheap imports resulted in a fall in Mexico s domestic steel production in ----, with output estimated to have contracted by about - over the year. However, with new import duties in place, we are looking for growth to resume from ---- with producers able to take advantage of growing demand from Mexico s fast-growing automotive production sector as well as other steel-intensive industries. ...While we expect production volumes to have stabilised over Q---, we nevertheless estimate a dip in production of about -.- y-o-y over the full year, with output falling to --.--mnt. However, a robust economy and growth in Mexico s major steel intensive industries means this contraction is likely to be short-lived, however, and we are looking for a return to positive production growth in ----, albeit at a relatively moderate rate of -.- y-o-y. Acceleration in output hereafter will see production expand at an average annual rate of -.- over --------- to reach --.--mnt by the end of the period. ...However, a robust economy and growth in Mexico s major steel intensive industries means this contraction is likely to be short-lived, however, and we are looking for a return to positive production growth in ----, albeit at a relatively moderate rate of -.- y-o-y. Acceleration in output hereafter will see production expand at an average annual rate of -.- over --------- to reach --.--mnt by the end of the period.

...Despite the aforementioned challenges, we expect growth in Mexico s steel production to resume from ---- as the recent contraction in global steel prices starts to bottom out and restrictions on imports allow profit margins to stabilise. Ameliorating conditions will see the underlying strengths of Mexico s steel sector come to the fore once more. ...Ameliorating conditions will see the underlying strengths of Mexico s steel sector come to the fore once more. Mexico s auto sector in particular will continue to attract investment and see production growth given its exposure to the US, the world s largest autos market, and Latin America, which will see growing demand for autos. Reforms to the country s energy sector lead us to forecast an uptick in oil and gas infrastructure investment and therefore increased consumption of steel used in pipelines and other equipment. ...Reforms to the country s energy sector lead us to forecast an uptick in oil and gas infrastructure investment and therefore increased consumption of steel used in pipelines and other equipment. We recognise the potential is large, and will thus monitor investment into the country s oil and gas industry, as well as a concurrent uptick in production and consumption trends, over the coming quarters.

...Concerns surrounding the reported dumping practices of Chinese producers have been voiced by Mexican steelmakers, many of whom have struggled to remain competitive against the wave of low-cost products entering the market. The local production unit of ArcelorMittal was among a growing number of companies announcing severe job cuts in late ---- as the producer looked to reduce capacity amid narrowing profit margins. ...
