Abstract:

We maintain the view that temporary visitors and, to a lesser extent, population growth will remain the main subscription growth drivers in the future, considering the low incidence of multiple SIM ownership among local consumers. However, competition could drive further uptake, especially as third entrant CHILI starts focusing on cutting prices and launches LTE services to attract customers. ...However, competition could drive further uptake, especially as third entrant CHILI starts focusing on cutting prices and launches LTE services to attract customers. Nevertheless, we expect the instance of multiple SIM ownership to remain low in Mauritius, and therefore expect that despite positive growth in subscriptions, the mobile penetration rate will stagnate at around --- during the final years of our forecast period. Mauritius is the top African country when it comes to -G/-G uptake, as we estimate half of mobile subscribers were -G/-G users at the end of ----. ...The top two operators launched LTE services in ----, which helped drive data growth, and we forecast -G/-G to represent almost -- of the subscriber base by ----, at -.--mn customers. CHILI s launch of LTE services in ---- provides additional impetus for migration over the next five years.

...Mauritius has one of the most developed fixed-line markets in Africa in terms of penetration, thanks to its relatively small size and more developed economy, which is home to a healthy financial services industry and serves as headquarters for many companies with operations throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Meanwhile, higher incomes in Mauritius, as well as the relatively more developed nature of the telecoms markets, are enabling telecoms operators to begin pursuing converged fixed-mobile services. ...Mauritius has one of the most developed fixed-line markets in Africa in terms of penetration, thanks to its relatively small size and more developed economy, which is home to a healthy financial services industry and serves as headquarters for many companies with operations throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Meanwhile, higher incomes in Mauritius, as well as the relatively more developed nature of the telecoms markets, are enabling telecoms operators to begin pursuing converged fixed-mobile services. This is helping to support modest growth in fixed voice subscriptions to ---,--- by ----. For the same reasons, Mauritius wireline broadband market is also highly developed by regional standards. Bolstered by increasing investment in fibre-optic networks, as well as continued investment into LTE networks, we forecast broadband connections to grow robustly over the --------- period, to reach ---,--- by ----, for a penetration rate of --.- .

...BMI View: Although they are both small and highly saturated telecoms markets, Mauritius and the Seychelles are very different. Mauritius offers the greater potential due to its larger size and relative affluence; the country is well developed, with -G/-G services and a modest wireline broadband market. ...
