About This Report

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that Malaysia has -.-bn bbl of proven oil reserves end ----, similar to ---- and ----. Moreover, the agency reported natural gas reserves of -.--tcm, a figure which has remain unchanged since ----. ...Nonetheless, the number of discoveries announced in recent years has likely pushed the reserves figures above the EIA s estimates. These reserves are mainly located offshore and broadly in three basins: the Malay basin in Peninsular Malaysia - containing some of Malaysia s most prolific oilfields such as Tapis - and the Sarawak and Sabah basins in East Malaysia. The country s oil reserves had traditionally been located in the Malay Basin and have been noted for their light and sweet quality. However, the Sabah and Sarawak basins have also been contributing to total reserve growth since ----. As noted in November ---- by Dzafri Sham Ahmad, LNG Group of Companies vice president and CEO at Petronas, Malaysia has over --- discovered oil and gas fields off the eastern state of Sarawak that have not yet been monetised.

Weak oil prices limit the attractiveness of boosting output, as demonstrated by Petronas large spending cuts for the coming four years. ...The consumption mix will remain dominated by diesel and gasoline over our forecast period. With the fall in crude oil production and the coming online of the RAPID oil refinery in ----, we forecast that Malaysia will become a net crude oil importer by ----. The country will remain a net importer of refined products throughout our forecast period. ...New production from a pipeline of gas projects coming online during --------- will result in stagnating net gas exports over the first half of our forecast period. Thereafter net exports will decline sharply on the back of falling domestic production.

...Gas reserves growth in Peninsular Malaysia has been largely flat. East Malaysia has been propping up the country s gas reserves, as exploration off the coasts of Sarawak and increasingly Sabah continues to prove up more commercial resources. ...
