Abstract:

< ALACRA META ABSTRACT>BMI View: Both the steel and tin sectors will come under increased pressure over ---- as a combination of falling price levels and increased regional production continue to eat away at companies profit margins. Against this backdrop, we expect Malaysia s metals sectors to take an increasingly defensive stance with protectionist policy and reduced investment expected to be a repeated feature over the months ahead. ...These recent developments follow a series of similar investigations carried out over the past few years; however, so far, the majority of these have yet to translate into the introduction of new import measures or tariffs. While tin producers have arguably had fewer issues to contend with than the steel sector, the industry has not escaped unscathed from sluggish global demand, with falling prices over the past few quarters leaving companies such as market leader Malaysia Smelting Corporation Berhad (MSC) increasingly exposed. The company, the world s second largest tin producer, reported a full-year net loss for ---- before announcing a further deficit in Q---. Shrinking margins have led the company to scale back its overseas operations and to focus its attention on domestic production at the firm s Butterfield plant. ...BMI View: A global increase protectionism across the steel industry will prove a blessing as well as a curse for Malaysian producers over ----. With consumption levels growing at a faster rate in Malaysia than in many neighbouring states, the country has borne the brunt of this export wave and was estimated to have imported almost -.--mnt of steel from China in ----, including ---,--- tonnes of wire rods, equivalent to -- of Malaysia s total import volume of the product. Moderate GDP growth over ---- is likely to lead to a slowing in Malaysia s steel consumption growth, with apparent usage forecast to expand by -.- this year, compared with -.- in ----. ...As such, we expect production growth to come in at a relatively moderate -.- year-on-year (y-o-y) in ---- to -.--mn tonnes (mnt). Growth is expected to average -.- a year over ---------, to reach -.--mnt by the end of our forecast period.

... Business Monitor International Ltd Page -- increasingly protectionist behaviour has already gone some way to assuaging the fears of local producers, with Megasteel Sdn Bhd, reportedly expecting domestic orders to improve on the back of the duties imposed. The company has reportedly increased output at its Banting facility in Selangor with production capacity at the plant raised to -.-mnt per year. ...
