Abstract:

BMI View: We expect positive but slow growth across the main Latvian ports in ---- with the latest statistics from the port of Riga, the country s largest port, indicating a trend of increased liquid bulk tonnage and decreasing general cargo volumes while the largest cargo type, dry bulk, remains at consistent levels. These trends are projected in our ---- estimates of modest growth in tonnage throughput and a decrease in container traffic at the port of Riga. ...These trends are projected in our ---- estimates of modest growth in tonnage throughput and a decrease in container traffic at the port of Riga. BMI s more positive outlook for ---- is supported by an anticipated recovery in Russian import demand and continued steady trade growth in other main partners such as Lithuania, Estonia and Germany. Over the medium term (---------) we forecast total trade growth to average -.- , stimulating slow but steady growth in throughput volumes at Latvian ports. ...Even with inflation anticipated to remain at low levels (-.- in ----), the country s economic performance will not significantly boost consumer demand and imports. Sustained growth in demand for imports in main trading partner countries will, however, drive Latvian export volumes, with exports anticipated to grow slightly more quickly than imports.

...Russia has showed its intention to suspend its coal and iron ore transit shipments through Latvia. Russian Railways (RZD) has said the potential suspension is due to maintenance work. However, Russia has previously stated that it wants to decrease its use of neighbouring ports in favour of utilising its own facilities. It has already done this with its liquid bulk transits, a strategy that has negatively impacted the throughput at some Baltic States ports. The port of Riga did not play a major role in Russia s liquid bulk supply chain and so was somewhat protected, but if Russia does move its dry bulk transits away from the port for an extended time, Riga s will be negatively hit, with dry bulk accounting for over -- of the port s total operations. ...It has already done this with its liquid bulk transits, a strategy that has negatively impacted the throughput at some Baltic States ports.
