Abstract:

BMI View: We anticipate that Kenya s shipping industry is well poised for growth over the short to medium term. Underpinning our forecasts is the continued expansion of the country s largest port at Mombasa as the facility attempts to position itself as a strategic hub in East Africa. Annual tonnage throughput growth in ---- is set to come in at -.- , a rate that will increase slightly over our forecast period to ----. Net exports traditionally contribute little to headline economic growth and we envisage little meaningful change to this trend as Kenya remains predominantly a consumption-driven economy, which tempers growth in the shipping industry somewhat. Kenya runs a wide current account deficit, and import demand will remain high due to the need to import food, fuel, and capital goods. Over the longer term, export diversification caused by rising automobile manufacturing and increased financial sector exports will help to limit the trade deficit. Oil production, which is expected to begin around ----, could also provide a boost to export earnings, although the recent collapse in oil prices has cast some doubt over the timeline and validity of some of these projects.

...Upside risk certainly arises from the boost in capacity that will accompany the expansion plans for the port of Mombasa, catering for increasing demand domestically and growing cargo volumes in countries such as Rwanda, Uganda, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The expansion is designed to also offset the increased competition posed by the expansion at the rival port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. ...The expansion is designed to also offset the increased competition posed by the expansion at the rival port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Agriculture plays an integral part in Kenya s export mix and the fortunes of this sector have an impact on the country s shipping industry. Kenya experienced a poor grains harvest in ----/-- owing to unfavourable weather, which impacted on yields. As a result, output declined by --.- year-on-year (y-o-y) for wheat and -.- y-o-y for corn. Despite the large decline in cereal production in the ----/-- season, we do not expect a considerable rebound in growth owing to base effects.

...Mombasa Sees Waiting Times Drop: The fact that vessel waiting times are falling at the port of Mombasa is boosting growth at the facility, according to the national port authority in August ----. With increased competition from regional rivals such as Tanzania and Djibouti, increasing the efficiency of the port is integral to keeping ahead of the competition. ...
