Abstract:

Source: Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (---- Census) challenges and Threats To Stability Ethnic Polarisation: Despite fears that the election would lead to a repeat of the communal bloodshed that marked polls in ----, Kenya experienced a peaceful transfer of power in ----. The losing candidate, outgoing Prime Minister Raila Odinga, took his protests about the result to the courts (as opposed to the streets as was the case in ----) and respected the judici- ary s decision. ...This may prove tricky given that the vast swathes of land owned by the Kenyatta family are widely regarded as being emblematic of the problem. International Pressure On President: Kenyatta s victory led some observers to predict a politically damaging clash between the president who is accused of committing crimes against humanity during the ---- election and has refused to fully cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) and Western backers of the court. We do not expect these measures to yield immediate results. ...With the majority of attacks likely to continue occurring along the coast (eg, Lamu, Mombasa) or in the arid northeast (eg, Mandera, Wajir) rather than in major economic centres, we do not expect the economic growth to be derailed or long-term investor perceptions undermined. However, with many of these rural and coastal areas already among the country s most economically marginalised and home to sizeable Muslim and Somali communities, the risk of home-grown radicalisation is an issue that the government appears now to be more serious about tackling. Long-Term Political outlook ethnic Polarisation remains Key challenge ...However, with many of these rural and coastal areas already among the country s most economically marginalised and home to sizeable Muslim and Somali communities, the risk of home-grown radicalisation is an issue that the government appears now to be more serious about tackling. Long-Term Political outlook ethnic Polarisation remains Key challenge

...The politicisation of sharp ethnic divisions remains the key threat to Kenya s long-term political stability. Although the ---- elections were peaceful, voting patterns show that the electorate continues to cast ballots according to its ethnicity. ...
