About This Report

Abstract:

BMI View: Overall, we view the Israeli water sector as offering limited opportunities for services and utilities companies, but substantial potential for water infrastructure companies. In particular, we anticipate significant long-term development of the wastewater collection, treatment and redistribution infrastructure. ...BMI sees further upside risk to our water forecasts for Israel, though small as we have already priced in strong growth in the industry value of the country s water. Israel will require USD--.-bn in funding to develop water infrastructure projects over the next -- years but drought-led tensions persist in many areas (most notably along the Israel/Lebanon border, the Gaza strip, and the Arab quarters of East Jerusalem) and this could cause difficulties in terms of water scarcity for industrial use and project instability to infrastructure developments. We also highlight that additional upside risks to our consumption and extraction forecasts are predicated upon major projects (pipeline construction, gas-fired power plants and desalination) gaining momentum. The emphasis on gas fired thermal electricity generation has a direct impact on the water consumption forecasts as the power sector is one of the largest consumers of water, using it for cooling processes during the electricity generation. In our opinion, a boost in the number of gas fired electricity generating plants will put additional strain on the water sector unless additional resources (such as desalination or reclaimed wastewater) become available.

...Israel s water sector is extremely well regulated and overseen by government authorities. Much of the local water sector is operated by private companies and consortiums. ...Largest desalination facility in the world is now operational. Strong government support for water sharing agreements and infrastructure projects provide stability and security for companies involved in, or investing in the developments. Largest desalination facility in the world is now operational. ...Palestinian water allocation a source of contention. Palestinian wastewater treatment facilities and sewage networks non-existent and the Gaza treatment plant has been damaged, resulting in high levels of water pollution and potential health issues.
