We expect the lifting of sanctions to facilitate increased production of steel, aluminium and other industrial metals, however, we note that the country continues to face a number of challenges, namely a weak infrastructure framework and the continued expansion of foreign export sectors. Currently the largest producer in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and among the -- largest producers in the world, Iran s steel industry is set to continue expanding at a steady pace over the next few years. ...The talks follow recent promises by the EU and US to life sanctions on non-oil trade to and from the country, a move which should aid the ability of Iranian steel mills to export steel and other metals and to import raw materials required in production. Given the potential implications of this for Iranian producers of steel and other metals, we will continue to monitor events closely over the coming quarters.

...While mills are starting to increase capacity on an individual level, BMI believes consolidation will be needed in order to raise output to the levels being touted by the Iranian government not to mention greater integration between state-managed production and private mills. Significant investment in infrastructure and technology will also be required. ...
