Abstract:

BMI View: We forecast positive expansion in India s trade sector in ---- and beyond, with growth strengthening over the next several years, which will support growth in the country s freight transport sector. Slower growth in the UK and the EU in the wake of the UK s decision to leave the EU is a salient risk to our outlook as it could negatively impact external demand for Indian goods, affecting ports such as JNPT in particular. Growth in Indian road haulage volumes will come in at -.- in ---- and -.- in ----, and the sector will continue to grow over the course of our forecast period and beyond. ...We expect a fairly mixed picture across India s major ports and between bulk shipping and container handling in ----, but the general outlook is for weak or negative growth. A major drag will be slower growth in key export markets in the wake of the UK s decision to leave the EU, which will negatively impact exports of textiles through Indian ports.

Investments in the sector will tend to concentrate in low-skilled areas targeting the country s domestic demand, and as a result any successes will likely be a negative for the Indian freight transport sector as they will reduce imports of foreign goods without bolstering exports. ...However, future manufacturing expansion will remain constrained by persistent infrastructure gaps and complex regulation of labour and land markets.
