About This Report

Abstract:

Hungary will reportedly be required to fulfil two conditions to get the European Commission s (EC) approval for the project: the first condition states all issues associated with the supervision of the power plant should be clearly separated from existing policymaking and the second is that the power produced should be sold at a power exchange in line with market principles and not directly to the Hungarian national grid. Investment is ongoing to modernise and upgrade electricity infrastructure in Hungary. EON confirmed a number of projects in the last few months, including the HUF---mn project to replace power lines and gas pipelines in the Kaposvar region and HUF-.-bn in similar upgrade works in the Gyr region. Following a fall in electricity generation in ----, we forecast a slight return to growth in ---- with generation expected to increase by -.-- to reach --.--TWh - leaving Hungary reliant upon electricity imports. With limited consumption growth and low electricity prices continuing to hamper the market, we are maintaining our forecasts for weak growth in total electricity generation in Hungary, with slim gains in natural-gas fired power and non-hydropower renewables offset by falls in coal-fired output. ...Following a fall in electricity generation in ----, we forecast a slight return to growth in ---- with generation expected to increase by -.-- to reach --.--TWh - leaving Hungary reliant upon electricity imports. ...Total power generation in Hungary will amount to --.--TWh in ----, rising to --.--TWh by ----. Thermal energy is currently the second biggest component in Hungary s energy mix after nuclear, constituting --.-- of the total in ----, and its relative share will increase over the forecast period, reaching --.-- by ----. ...Thermal energy is currently the second biggest component in Hungary s energy mix after nuclear, constituting --.-- of the total in ----, and its relative share will increase over the forecast period, reaching --.-- by ----. Of this amount, the largest share is currently taken up by coal-fired generation, however natural gas-fired generation will gain ground over the forecast period and by ---- natural-gas and coal-fired generation will have nearly equal shares. After a fall in natural gas production in ---- following the closure of a natural gas plant in Tiszaujvaros, the future of gas in Hungary appears more sustainable and we expect overall output to increase from -.--TWh in ---- to -.--TWh by ----, due primarily to efficiency gains and output increases. ...Of this amount, the largest share is currently taken up by coal-fired generation, however natural gas-fired generation will gain ground over the forecast period and by ---- natural-gas and coal-fired generation will have nearly equal shares. ...BMI View: The outlook for Hungary s power sector is mixed. On the one hand the government is keen to improve energy security and is investing in the expansion of both cross-border connections and domestic capacity. ...
