Abstract:

Within the thermal power segment, coal will retain its status as the dominant fuel for electricity generation, despite strong growth in gas and renewables generation and global commitments to fighting climate change. We maintain that investment in coal will remain resilient as growth in emerging markets (particularly in Asia) offsets a decline in coal-fired capacity in North America and Western Europe. While we expect strong growth in electricity consumption in Asia and MENA in particular, this is counterbalanced by stagnant or even falling demand for electricity in developed markets over the next decade. Consumption in NAWE will be constrained by improved energy efficiency, as well as growth in distributed generation, batteries, advances in smart technology and smart grids, and widespread deployment of supply and demand management measures. We expect growth in renewables capacity to be driven by China and India over the next decade as both attempt to address domestic concerns about pollution and demonstrate environmental stewardship. ...With competition for contracts pushing bid prices lower and lower, large international companies with economies of scale will outperform in upcoming auctions. Continued evolution of battery technology would have substantial disruptive impacts on the global power and transport sectors - as it would enable greater integration of intermittent renewable energy sources in

India is also making big strides in the renewable sector under Prime Minister Narendra Modi - with solar set to outperform as the country looks to use renewables to plug a power capacity deficit. At a global level, we expect wind to account for the biggest proportion of renewables capacity over our forecast period, but expect solar to record the fastest growth rate. ...Notably, our forecasts only include grid-connected projects - meaning that we do not include all household solar in our forecasts. We expect rooftop solar to grow exponentially in developed markets, in line with falling technology costs, more innovative financing mechanisms and improvements in battery technology.

...Our view that coal will still be the biggest component of the power mix by ---- is supported by our Key Projects Database (KPD). The chart below draws on data from the KPD to show that there is currently almost --- gigawatts (GW) of coal capacity in the global project pipeline, almost double the next biggest type of capacity - hydropower (see Global Coal Power Outlook In Three Key Charts , January --). ...
