Abstract:

Production -.- Growth in Ghanaian production will recover in ----/--, after declining in ----/-- due to poor weather and a reduction in fertiliser usage after the Ghanaian government reduced farm subsidies. We forecast Ghana s output growth to average -.- per year out to ----/--, in contrast with an average yearly decline of -.- over the last four years. ...We forecast Ghana s output growth to average -.- per year out to ----/--, in contrast with an average yearly decline of -.- over the last four years. Our expectations for more normalised weather conditions and higher set prices from the government, which will allow farmers to increase input usage, underpin our bullish view on Ghana. Consumption -.- Domestic end-usage growth will be driven by a number of macroeconomic factors throughout the forecast period. Increased domestic grindings (to be used for export) will help service growth in global consumption. Trade Ghana will remain one of the world s largest cocoa exporters throughout the coming years, although it will not challenge Cote d Ivoire s status as the world s largest exporter.

...Cocoa production in Ghana will improve throughout the coming years, as the set price given to farmers by Cocobod will increase, allowing them to spend more on inputs. However, the sector suffers from key structural issues, such as labour shortages and fragmentation, which will prevent the country from overtaking Cote d Ivoire as the world s largest cocoa producer and exporter. ...Cocoa production in Ghana will improve throughout the coming years, as the set price given to farmers by Cocobod will increase, allowing them to spend more on inputs. However, the sector suffers from key structural issues, such as labour shortages and fragmentation, which will prevent the country from overtaking Cote d Ivoire as the world s largest cocoa producer and exporter. Ghana s palm oil production will grow steadily throughout the next five years, but mainly due to low base effects as the African palm oil sector is constrained by low productivity and elevated costs. Structural weaknesses and relatively low international palm oil prices will force foreign investors to reconsider their expansion plans in Africa. Consequently, Ghana will remain a net importer of palm oil over the coming years.
